There was a temple dedicated to the sun god Apollo in the city of Delphi, in ancient Greece. The walls of the temple were inscribed with maxims for visitors to contemplate. One of those maxims was "Nothing too much." My Native American teacher often urged her students to "walk in balance." The Chinese ying-yang symbol is a visual reminder of how the dynamic forces in life can be balanced and creative within demarcated boundaries. These examples from different spiritual traditions illustrate the necessity of avoiding extremes in one's spiritual life.
Carefully observe your involvement with your spiritual community and your spiritual practices. Are you doing too little or too much? In particular, are you overly enthusiastic about your spiritual path? (A sign of dangerous fanaticism is that your enthusiasm for your path makes you push it or even force it on others.) Always review what you are doing in your spiritual life and change whatever is out of balance, especially if it impedes you in your self-evolution and your day to day life. This is an art, to be sure, but consistently examining your spiritual activities will make your future development much more successful.
